The Lantern, located on Ilfracombe’s High Street is a beautiful building highly regarded by the people of the town. Historically it has been a Church, more recently being owned by Devon County Council, when it was used as a centre for Devon’s Youth Service and as a community building until closing in 2012.
In 2013 Ilfracombe Town Council were offered the opportunity to purchase The Lantern. After much deliberation and discussion and after consultation with the Ilfracombe community it was decided we would take it on.
From that day on the plan to reopen The Lantern began, thanks to the invaluable support, time, skills, effort and dedication of the fantastic Old Gits Club (a group of volunteers, mostly made up of retired, skilled tradespeople). The building has been updated, renovated, cleared and cleaned, made safe, repaired, redecorated and freshened up.
So, in November 2015, as part of Ilfracombe’s fabulous Lighting the Lights event, The Lantern opened its doors to the community for the first time in 3 years. It was a massively successful evening as hundreds packed into The Great Hall for mulled wine and mince pies and to listen to the Ilfracombe Male Voice Choir. It really was a great celebration of this wonderful building and the people of Ilfracombe were extremely pleased to see the building open, and in use once again.
From that day the work has continued and now The Great Hall and Club Room are regularly used by individuals, clubs, businesses and community groups. The Newly updated offices are now available for hire, the preschool are due to return in time for the next school year, and the Café is almost completed. The final part of the renovation will provide a healthy café and coffee shop as well as being a training environment for people new to and returning to work.
The Lantern really has been and will continue to be a community project, supported by the people of Ilfracombe, it’s a great pleasure to see it being used again.
