Town Council Top the Token Count
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported our bid to gain a grant through the Tesco #BagsofHelp initiative.
The great news is that thanks to the support of Tesco customers at the Ilfracombe store the Town Council’s chipper/shredder project came FIRST!
As a reminder, we applied for this grant as a response to the budget cuts being made by other local authorities, which impact on some of the services and frequency of services being provided. So, Ilfracombe Town Council recruited a Town Operative last year to overcome some of the shortfall and to undertake our own grass cutting, pruning and weeding (to name but a few tasks).
This work continues to be performed very well and the results of all our efforts can be seen here.
One area that hampers this work is the disposal of all the green waste. Just like any resident or local business, we as a Council have to pay to take our green waste to the recycling centre. To minimise this cost we decided to purchase a chipper/composter with potential funding from the Tesco #BagsofHelp initiative. With this we will be able to turn all the weeds that are collected into compost and provide chippings with the tree bark. All of this can then be put back onto the green areas around the town in the most sustainable of ways.
Thank you to Tesco for supporting local initiatives and more details of their excellent scheme can be found on the Tesco Bags of Help website.
We would also like to send our congratulations to the Ilfracombe Film Festival who received the second place grant. The final count must have been very close!
Finally, thank you again to everyone who supported our cause that will enable the Town Council to work towards creating a greener, more cost effective, Ilfracombe for us all to enjoy.
